Compost Food Waste

How Can Food Composting Create Savings and Lower My Costs?

Food composting, whether through green cone systems, or your own system, can create savings and help lower environmental impacts in several ways:

  1. Lower Carbon Footprint
    • When food waste decomposes in landfills, it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Composting food waste helps to reduce methane emissions, mitigating your environmental impact.
  2. Reduced Waste Disposal Costs
    • By composting food scraps and organic waste, you can significantly reduce the amount of trash you send to landfills or incinerators. This can lead to lower waste disposal costs, especially in areas where municipalities charge by weight or volume for waste collection.
  3. Reduced Water Usage
    • Healthy, compost-enriched soil retains water more efficiently, reducing the need for irrigation. This can lead to water savings, particularly in agricultural or gardening applications, but also in landscaping maintenance costs.
  4. Reduced Packaging Waste
    • Composting can lead to a reduction in the amount of packaging waste generated, as it encourages the use of whole foods and minimizes food waste.
  5. Municipal Incentives
    • Some municipalities offer incentives or subsidies for food waste composting programs, which can help offset the costs associated with implementing composting systems in homes, businesses, or communities.
  6. Educational and PR Opportunities
    • Implementing food composting can also enhance your organization’s or community’s public image and potentially attract environmentally-conscious customers or residents.
  7. Compliance with Regulations
    • In some regions, there are regulations that require the separation and proper disposal of organic waste. Composting helps you comply with these regulations, avoiding potential fines or penalties.
  8. Community Building
    • Composting can foster a sense of community and shared responsibility for the environment. This can lead to cost savings through collaborative efforts and shared resources.
  9. Soil Enrichment
    • Compost is a valuable soil amendment. It improves soil structure, enhances water retention, and adds essential nutrients to the soil. As a result, you may need to use fewer chemical fertilizers, saving money on soil conditioning and maintenance.

While setting up a food composting system may initially require an investment in equipment and education, the long-term savings and environmental benefits can be substantial. It’s important to consider the specific needs and circumstances of your business or community when evaluating the potential financial and environmental benefits of food composting.

The Green Cone

In 2022, CGLIHC piloted a Green Cone system. Staff distributed the green cone system to agencies, farms, and partners. The system utilizes concentrated sun exposure to more rapidly breakdown food waste into small amounts of usable compost. Farms such as Emery Family Farm, Nourse Farm, Community Harvest Project and Regional Environment Council utilize the systems, keeping food waste out of the carbon intensive waste industry.
